Review of Sunday Roast at The Eagle, Brighton

Review of the Sunday Roast at The Eagle, Gloucester Road, Brighton, Brighton & Hove

Sunday 8th September 2013

Roast Beef £9.95 and Roast Chicken

To be completely honest we were actually going to try the Roast at The Basketmakers arms in Brighton’s North Laines this Sunday. They have been requesting that we do and so set off on our way. Unfortunately when we got there the Pub was rammed and it didn’t look like it would be letting up any time soon.

Across the road is the Eagle, the only reason we were not going there was because we have been previously and we always like to try new places. When we entered, the Eagle was equally as busy and only by a small miracle did we manage to grab a little table in the corner.

The Eagle is a lovely cosy pub, in Brightons North Laines, that serves very good food but is also quite lively for an evening out as well. I have frequented the Eagle on many occasions for both food and drinks and the food and service have always been consistently good.

We ordered our drinks and studied the Sunday menu. The roast options included Roast lamb, Roast beef, Roast pork belly and Roast chicken as well as Puy lentil, mushroom & red onion wellington. You can also order “The BIG ONE” which sounds amazing and includes extra of everything! I went for the Roast beef and my partner the Roast chicken.

We didn’t have to wait too long before our food arrived and we were grateful of that as we were hungry. The roasts at The Eagle are served in plates that look more like bowls which proved quite difficult to eat from. My Roast beef looked great cooked pretty rare, it was extremely tough to cut though and I could have done with a steak knife as it hurt my finger cutting it! My partner s Roast chicken was well flavoured, tender and juicy though.  We had some fantastic roasted beetroot which was a welcome addition to the roast dinner and tasted sublime. There was also some boiled cauliflower, kale, carrots and sliced green beans that were all cooked al dente and roasted butternut squash which had a lovely thyme seasoning.

There were three roast potatoes, they looked quite crispy on the outside but didn’t quite live up to how they looked. Both plates were swimming in gravy which unfortunately wasn’t a good thing, it was quite thin and watery without much flavour. The Yorkshire was great, homemade, as was the horseradish which was also very good, probably the best we’ve had along our Roast journey.

This is probably one of the first roasts I have had where the veg has been better than the meat but it did seem to be that way. I loved the big selection of veg you got with it especially the beetroot and butternut squash, I could have just eaten a plate of that. Shame the meat wasn’t quite up to scratch.

 Roasty rating 6.5/10
